Grunge
The photo on the left shows the Grunge movement's effect. As you can see, the movement caused people to "dress-down" and dress more comfortably. Obviously this population cared more about the way they felt than how they looked. Contrasting patterns and materials was very important in this style. The woman is wearing a graphic t-shirt with a long plaid skirt with boots. The outfit looks strange, but also gives a sense of strength to the woman's appearance. Even the sleek hair styles give a sense of mystery to the woman, creating a more social effect rather than a fashionable one.
Prep
This photo represents the preppy movement of the 90's. Unlike Grunge dressing, Prep dressing focused more on appeal rather than comfortability. Preps wanted to look nice and "dress-up", so dress shirts and skirts were very popular. Though most of the clothes were supposed to look "nice", they often look "wacky". As you can see, two of the boys in the picture have a floral pattern shirt on which gives both a professional yet playful and positive look.

Certain fads from the 80's were still around like sneakers and denim, but the 90's were a completely different society. 80's were about being unique, while the 90's were more about fititng in. Of course there were tensions between the main two fashion groups, which created another form of discrimation against those who are different. The Preps became known as the popular kids, because popularity was more important to them, while the Grunge kids became the new outsiders. Whichever fashion you rocked in the 90's, it was necessary to fit in.
